Why Elwood exists

From
Ian Greer
Re
The work behind the research

I didn't come to markets from a trading desk, and I didn't inherit money, a network or a map. I paid my way through university on student loans and spent years looking for a way to build wealth that didn't depend on luck or permission.

What I found is that investing is a learnable discipline. I studied how capital actually compounds across equities, real estate, options and digital assets, and how the best allocators think about scarcity, cycles and risk. That work became a research practice, and the methodology behind it became Part II of my book, The Blueprint.

Elwood Research is that practice, opened to clients. No hype and no borrowed conviction: research I act on myself, written in plain English, so you understand exactly what you own and why you own it.

Two markets, one window.

Digital assets

Scarce money, arriving capital

Bitcoin's supply is fixed at 21 million, and no committee can print more. For the first time, that scarcity is meeting institutional demand: spot ETFs, corporate treasuries and the largest asset managers in the world. We believe this repricing is structural rather than cyclical, and that disciplined research separates the assets that endure from the ones that don't.

Technology equities

The stack beneath everything

Every industry now runs on the same foundation: compute, semiconductors and platforms. Technology equities are how you own the toll roads of the digital economy, if you can tell durable competitive advantage from narrative. That distinction is the job.

Ten lenses. Every asset.

Nothing enters the Elwood portfolio on narrative. Before we take a position, the asset passes through the same ten-point framework, and it stays under review for as long as we hold it.

Origin and background

Who built it, why, and what it was designed to do.

Applied to every position. Reviewed for as long as we hold it.

Risk is the first question.

Returns get the headlines. Survival earns them. Four rules govern every position we take.

Diversified by design
Across asset classes and within them. Concentration builds returns; diversification survives being wrong. We hold both ideas at once, deliberately.
Time in the market
We hold through cycles. The plan for volatility is written before we buy, so the news cycle never gets to make our decisions for us.
No leverage. Ever.
Debt turns drawdowns into endings. We size every position to survive being early, being wrong, or both.
Margin of safety
Exit defined before entry, entry before target. Protecting against being wrong beats predicting being right.

Asked, answered.

Is it too late to invest in digital assets?

We don't think in tops and bottoms; we think in adoption curves. The institutional infrastructure for this asset class (ETFs, regulated custody, corporate treasuries) has only recently arrived, and allocations from large pools of capital remain small relative to the market's size. There are no guarantees in markets, which is exactly why the research matters. Position sizing and time horizon shape outcomes far more than entry timing.

What about volatility?

Volatility is the admission price of the asset class, not a malfunction. We plan for drawdowns before we enter a position (sizing, time horizon and exit conditions are set in advance), so a red month doesn't force a bad decision. Our discipline is built to survive volatility, not to pretend it away.

What about regulation, hacks, or quantum computing?

Risk gets its own lens in our framework because these questions deserve real answers. Every note names what could kill the thesis: regulatory shifts, security assumptions, technological change. We favor assets with the longest security track records and the deepest institutional adoption. When the facts change, our positions change, and members hear about it first.

Is this personalized financial advice?

No. Elwood publishes research and general market commentary: what we hold, and why. It is not individualized investment advice and doesn't account for your personal circumstances. Consider your own situation, and consult a licensed professional where appropriate, before acting on anything we publish.
